A masala pouch has to hold aroma in and light out for the full shelf cycle. Get the laminate wrong and the customer opens a pouch of garam masala that smells like cardboard; the brand loses the next purchase. Get it right and your masala stands out on a shelf carrying 30 other brands, all fighting for the same spot in the kitchen rotation.

We manufacture custom-printed masala packing pouches at our Madhyamgram facility — pre-made pouches, laminated rolls for FFS lines, stand-up zipper formats, and 3-layer aluminium constructions — in pack sizes from 10 g sachets to 500 g family packs.

Common sizes we manufacture

The five sizes Indian retail expects across ground masala, spice blends, and ready-mix SKUs:

10 g single-use sachet

Single-use sachet. Sample packs, hotel / HoReCa portion control, kirana counter impulse buy. Most common for chaat masala and ready-mix blends. Three-side-seal pouch is the workhorse format at this size.

50 g entry-level retail

Entry-level retail SKU at ₹10–₹30 price points. Used across turmeric, chilli, coriander, and entry blend SKUs. Three-side-seal pouch on a 3-layer laminate is the standard.

100 g branded ground masala

The most common branded ground-masala size and the crossover point where stand-up zipper starts paying back. Center-seal pouch for value SKUs; stand-up zipper for premium blends and modern-trade channels.

200 g value pack

Heavier laminate gauge to handle the increased pouch weight. Favoured by households cooking at scale. Stand-up zipper format is standard at this size for branded SKUs.

500 g bulk

Bulk SKU for joint families, caterers, and HoReCa buyers. Stand-up zipper is standard — customers reseal between uses, and the pouch needs to hold shape under repeated handling.

Custom sizes between these are quoted on request.

Masala packing pouches: choosing the laminate

Three laminate structures cover the bulk of masala packaging at our facility, each picked for a different shelf-life and price point.

3-layer PET + MET PET + LDPE. The premium default for ground masala and aromatic blends. The metallised PET inner blocks oxygen and light — the two enemies of spice aroma. Used by every branded national masala SKU. This is the structure we recommend unless the buyer is firmly on a price-led brief.

2-layer PET + LDPE. The value tier — used for short-shelf-life masala SKUs sold through fast-moving regional channels. Suitable for non-aromatic ingredients like kala namak or table salt blends; not recommended for garam masala or chaat masala where aroma retention is the whole product.

Whichever structure, we offer up to 8-colour rotogravure printing in a single pass — enough headroom for spot brand colours, gradients, and the masala hero shot or ingredient photography on the front panel.

Pouch formats available

Four formats cover the bulk of masala production at our facility.

Three-side-seal pouch. The simplest and cheapest format. Sealed on three edges, opens at the top. Best for 10 g and 50 g SKUs where the customer empties the pouch into a dabba in one go.

Center-seal pouch. Sealed along a back fin. Widely used for 100 g and 200 g masala SKUs running through semi-auto pouching lines. Cleaner front panel for brand graphics.

Stand-up zipper pouch. Stands upright on the shelf without external support; resealable zipper across the top. The format used by leading national masala brands and by regional brands moving upmarket. Customers reseal between uses, which matters for products that lose aroma fast once opened. We support stand-up zipper at any size from 100 g upward.

Laminated FFS roll. For brands running an in-house Form-Fill-Seal line. We slit the laminate to your machine’s web width, in the right inside-layer LDPE grade (Natural or N/F) for your sealing jaws. Faster line speed, lower per-pouch cost, higher upfront setup.

Masala variants we package

A single masala brand usually carries a SKU spread across multiple sub-categories. The pouch spec stays similar across variants — what changes is the artwork, the variant identity, and sometimes the pack size.

  • Single-spice ground masala — turmeric, red chilli, coriander, cumin powder. The highest-volume SKUs in the category. Print needs to communicate purity and colour saturation.
  • Blend masala — garam masala, sabzi masala, kitchen king, meat masala. Aroma retention is the primary spec driver here; always 3-layer.
  • Regional masala — chaat, pav bhaji, sambar, rasam, biryani, chicken / mutton masala. Strong regional identity in the design; often 50 g and 100 g sizes.
  • Ready-mix masala — instant gravy bases, dry-mix preparations. Sometimes shipped as 25 g portion sachets stapled inside a master pouch.

For whole spices like cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cardamom pods, and dry red chilli — where the customer wants to see the spice itself — see our [whole spices packaging pouch](/applications/whole-spices-packaging-pouch) page, which covers transparent window construction in detail.

FAQ

What is the MOQ for a masala packing pouch order?+

For laminated rolls and pre-made three-side-seal or center-seal pouches, MOQ is 300 kg of laminated film per design. For stand-up zipper pouches, MOQ is 500 kg per design — the heavier laminate spec and zipper conversion need a longer run for the setup to amortise correctly. A 100 g masala pouch typically runs 7–9 g of laminate, so 300 kg covers roughly 33,000–42,000 pouches per SKU. The formal MOQ for your order is stated in our quotation.

Why a 3-layer laminate for masala packaging?+

Ground masala loses aroma faster than almost any other food category — volatile oils in cumin, cardamom, fenugreek, and chilli escape through 2-layer films within weeks. The MET PET barrier layer in our 3-layer PET + MET PET + LDPE structure blocks both oxygen and light, the two things that age ground spices on the shelf.

Will turmeric or chilli stain the pouch from inside?+

Turmeric and red-chilli oils can migrate into porous film and discolour the inner surface. The MET PET inner barrier in our 3-layer construction blocks this migration; the printed outer panel is unaffected. For high-oil spice blends like garam masala, the same 3-layer spec also stops oil weeping through the heat seal.

Can I get a stand-up zipper for a premium spice brand?+

Yes — stand-up zipper pouches are available at any size from 100 g upward. Useful for chaat masala, garam masala, and spice-blend SKUs where customers reseal between uses and where shelf presence matters. Below 100 g the zipper rarely pays back.

Will the pouches work on my Form-Fill-Seal machine?+

Yes. We supply laminated film as slit-to-order rolls in your web width with the right inside-layer LDPE grade (Natural or N/F) for your sealing jaws. Pre-made center-seal or 3-side-seal pouches are the alternative for hand-fill, semi-auto, or low-volume SKUs.

What is the lead time on a first masala packing pouch order?+

Typical first-run lead time is 20–30 working days from artwork sign-off — most of that is cylinder engraving. Repeat orders take 10–15 working days because the cylinders are ready with us. The formal lead time is stated in the quotation we issue.
